The sovereign and queen bestow their grace at last;
rites and prayers neither add nor take away.

Mulian Sees His Mother
The Buddha's disciple Maudgalyayana saw his late mother suffering among the hungry ghosts, and the food he offered her turned to ash. On the Buddha's advice he made offerings to the whole community of monks on the fifteenth of the seventh month, and through their shared merit she was freed. This is the origin of the Ullambana festival.
